Abstract
The Australian retail industry has recently experienced anotherspate of takeovers, when Coles took over myer and Woolworths took over Safeway, giving us the dubious honour of having the highest level of concentration of retail sales in the hands of two companies. Economist Stuart Rosewarne, from Sydney University, looks at the implications and challenges the go-ahead given to them by the Trade Practices Commission.
