Abstract
Rajiv Gandhi's assassination marks the end of an epoch in Indian politics. The postwar creed of secular liberalism is threatened by the rise of communalism and caste warfare. Dipesh Chakrabarty argues that the conflict goes to the heart of conceptions of ethnicity in modern political culture.
