Publication history: The University of Wollongong's first official 'University Day' was held in August 1976. The Day commemorated the establishment of the University in 1961 as a then college of the University of New South Wales. In the late 1980s the date and format of this event changed. Between 1989 and 1997 an evening ceremony was held on the Monday closest to May 8th each year. A program booklet was printed to accompany each ceremony. Visiting speakers who gave the University Day address during this period included Sir Michael Somare, Fred Hollows, Barry Jones, Bob Carr and Noel Pearson.
