Writers are very much united in their love of stories; however, it is important to note that we are unique in temperament, influence, style, taste and attitude. We’d be lying if we told you that the process of producing Tide was all peaches and lavender. Tide is difficult. It is the clash of creative opinions, perspectives and goals—as diverse as we are as people. Despite the struggle, it was the culmination and transcendence of these aspects which gives rise to Tide: something unique in both the experience and the finished product. Tide is a foray into the scary world of organised creativity. It’s mighty hopeful to ask creative writers to take on the roles of editors, designers, fundraisers and production managers. We may have eaten far more Caramello Koalas than any human should consume, and did not receive the recommended eight hours of sleep per night, but we reached the finish line and are proud to present to you the ninth edition of Tide. This year we have asked contributors to explore the theme of ‘endings’. The finality of such a topic is sometimes dark, sometimes nostalgic and often illuminating. It encompasses the cyclic nature of not only the writing process but also of life. While we may never re-friend each other on Facebook, we will always have our memories and, like us, you will always have Tide.

For the first few days it seemed perfectly possible to pull together a literary journal in ten weeks — starting with no submissions, no design layout, and no money. After ten weeks of pressure and doom, it at last seems possible again. We’d like you to meet the 2011 edition of Tide. Look into the cover and tell us what you see. There are no wrong answers. Except for the one you’re thinking of. 2011 brings the largest Tide issue yet — in scope as well as pure size. Its cover strains to hold in pieces from local writers as well as interstate and international offerings. From poetry to prose to monologue, from coming of age tales to affairs with refrigerators, Tide has it covered. We’ve put together an issue where, we feel, even the most eccentric reader can find something written just for them. We were attracted to pieces that blurred boundaries and looked at familiar themes in a new way. You’ll find pieces that mix teen angst with text adventure brushing up against twisted interpretations of romantic bliss. Our contributors will carry you wide-eyed to the roar and grit of the streets of Saigon, to Bali’s exotic shores, and back again with unexpected homegrown tales. These pieces will cause you to look again, seeing some new quirk that you’d swear wasn’t there the first time. So look at the cover again. Really? That’s interesting. Now tell me about your mother...

Literature has great power: in it we see ourselves reflected, and through it we can travel almost anywhere. Like a footprint, the impression of a good story will linger after the story itself has left us. In this edition of Tide, we contemplate desire and loss, confront addiction and sexuality. From the comfortable familiarity of Australian suburbia and rural communities, we travel across exotic landscapes and foreign cities to reach metaphysical planes and question reality. Finally, we return home. To contribute to the Tide legacy is a great privilege. The seventh edition stands as testament to all we have been able to achieve as a group in our past three years together, much of which would have been impossible without the support that surrounds us. With much love and thanks, we welcome you to Tide 2010.

Editors' Note - For some time now, esteemed Readers, there has been a considerable lack of Victorian verbosity and pomposity in the realm of student publications. Such collections are often too earnest and self-aware, and as a result the once respectable name of 'Youth' in the modern literary canon has become inglorious. The only way in which to remedy this situation is with a healthy dose of Ganderax. Consider this journal to be the first stride towards a new ideal. Both the prose and poesy found betwixt these stiffened covers shall be a golden orb of inspiration for a new generation of literary sensibility. Our band of jocund wordsmiths can feel no greater pride in a success such as this. Elementary! As the Tide ebbs and flows, let this be seen as the highest watermark: the one that claims the shoreline. In the name of Literature, Dr Dog Watson, Esq.

Editorial - Ticka Ticka Ticka Boom, TIDE talks the talk, tops the pops, tells both truths and twists taboos, tattoos the tempo o/life on the temples a/humanity: TIDE is a tripped-out trick that trunks the funk at five bucks a thrash. Compiled by third-year editing students, TIDE is collection of creative writing and artwork solicited from University of Wollongong students and beyond. It is a publication showcasing a broad range of what creative writing has to offer; a publication which, in time, we hope will become an ongoing anthology of emerging talent. As writers and editors, our aim is to show how poetry, prose and script have the power to shape our perception of reality - to inspire, educate and emancipate. The production of TIDE, while trying at times, has worked to re-emphasise the importance of creative passion in an increasingly pragmatic world. We have learnt that brilliance is rarely achieved alone and our successes are owed to the effort and compromise of our fellow editors, writers and artists who have worked together to make this publication possible. You hold in your hands: TIDE 2006

Editors' note - This has not been an easy process. At every point along the way we have deliberated, argued, fought, fucked around and, eventually, forgiven. From the circle of love to the visiting postgrads, from cinnamon rolls to glamour shots, from violent ethical debates to wine lists, in the deep dark underbelly of building twenty-five, we have finally finished the publication. The collection draws on the work of University of Wollongong creative writers and the Illawarra community. Including poetry, prose, a manifesto, a monologue and photographs, this literary endeavour represents the collective effort of sixteen committed editors. Enjoy. - Ed(s)

Welcome to TIDE! TIDE (edit spelt backwards in case you didn't notice) is a collaborative literary 'zine hoping to promote creative writing at the University of Wollongong and in the wider community. It's also a good excuse to have our names in print. The works included showcase the great talent that we have here in the 'gong and at the uni. We are a group of eleven 3rd-year students from the School of Journalism and Creative Writing. Interested in the nitty-gritty of the writing process, we want to make our work tight, concise and fabulous! We hope we've succeeded, read on and judge for yourself! We'd like to thank Tania Daniels at Wollongong Cultural Services, Wollongong City Council, John Scott at the School of Journalism and Creative Writing, University of Wollongong, Marlus Foley at the School of Art and Design, University of Wollongong, the South Coast Writers' Centre, and the Marvellous Shady Cosgrove.

‘A rising tide lifts all boats.’ This has always been the way of TIDE and the fifth edition is no exception. TIDE submerges us in a myriad of contemporary prose and poetry, aiming to drown its readers in literature. The TIDE literary journal, produced entirely by thirdyear editing students from the Creative Arts Faculty of the University of Wollongong, showcases the compositions of emerging poets, prose writers and visual artists. The publication aims to support and promote the local literary arts and to reinstate their cultural importance within the community. TIDE is the result of labour undertaken by our editors, fundraisers, designers, print officers, teachers, businesses, community members, artists and writers whose efforts have made the publication possible.
