Abstract

This study was undertaken as an initial investigation of osmoregulation in Cyanobacteria with particular reference to the use of organic osmoregulatory solutes and consequently to examine any physiological basis for the classification according to habitat made by Geitler in 1932. Cyanobacteria from marine and freshwater environments were readily available from culture collections, but because very few hypersaline strains were available, a number of cyanobacteria were isolated from hypersaline environments in Australia.
