Abstract

Book review essay: Retort 2005: Afflicted powers: capital and spectacle in a new age of war. London and New York: Verso. xii 211 pp. £9.99 paper. ISBN: 1 84467 031 7.

This book has already received a good deal of positive attention without and within geography, including substantial essays in New Left Review (by Gopal Balakrishnan and Julian Stallabrass) and a major session at the 2006 Association of American Geographers meeting. Authored by Iain Boal, T.J. Clark, Joseph Matthews and geographer Michael Watts, Afflicted powers is a polemic ‘in the tradition . . . of the pamphleteering . . . Left in its heyday’.
