Abstract

The risk factors for many chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and some cancers are associated with poor diet and/or weight gain. Preventing diseases through improved nutrition is now a global health priority. However, before adults can improve the quality of their diet, they need to have a greater awareness of what constitutes healthy eating. Many adults are unaware of what they are eating and believe their diet is healthy when it isn't. Therefore, accurate and timely assessment of food intake is necessary so that consumers can be better informed on what constitutes a healthy diet consistent with a country's dietary guidelines. An overview of the technology required as well as current developments and future challenges and opportunities for the use of mobile devices for informing, guiding, monitoring, and improving nutritional intake of individuals, groups, and populations will be outlined in this chapter.
