Background: The Australian Bicentenary commemorated the 200th anniversary of permanent European settlement in Australia. This exhibition showcased then contemporary works of over 64 Illawarra artists on the theme of the Bicentennial. It did not aim to present the viewer with a strong notion of regional identity but rather conceptions of location, place, social and cultural histories experienced by contributing artists. The exhibition included works by Ian Gentle, Gino Sanguineti, and several of the University’s Visual Arts staff and students.
