Description
Screenprint, printed in colour from eight stencils, 52 x 42 cm.University of Wollongong Archives Collection.
Background:This poster was used to promote a fundraiser for local community action group Illawarra Residents Against Toxic Environments (IRATE). IRATE developed from RATS (Residents Against the Smelter), a protest group, formed in 1996 when the NSW State government consented to the reopening and upgrade of the copper smelter at Port Kembla that had effectively been closed since 1995 due to a combination of factors, including industrial disputes and a repeated inability to comply with environmental controls. Residents were concerned about the health and environment effects of current emissions and historical contamination from heavy industry in the Port Kembla area.
