Abstract
The range and volume of human activities affecting the marine environment has risen exponentially since the birth of the environmental movement in the 1960s. Conventional uses of the oceans such as navigation and fishing are intensifying while the catalogue of new uses such as hydrocarbon and minerals exploitation, bioprospecting, marine geo-engineering and ocean energy production continues to grow.
