Abstract

This chapter will explore key features of the maritime regulation framework for ABNJ and its applicability to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity, gaps and disconnects in that framework and ongoing global efforts to develop more effective regulation systems for thse vast areas of the ocean. It will discuss some of the options which have been considered inthe UN Ad Hoc Informal Open-ended Working Group to study issues related to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ Working Group) to evolve the legal and institutional framework for conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity in ABNJ and their current and future relevance for maritime regulation in ABNJ.
