Abstract
The University of Wollongong Historical Society presents its first issue of the 'Historical Journal1 to celebrate the University's autonomy. The Society was formed in September 197^ to provide a forum for discussion, and to encourage the study of history. This Journal aims at promoting all fields of history and related interdisciplinary studies, without any particular specialisation. It therefore welcomes the submission of suitable scholarly articles. The editorial committee wishes to thank the contributors and all those who have assisted and enabled the production of this issue. The views expressed herein are those of the contributors and not necessarily those of the Society or of the University.
