'Mind the Baby': managing cancer and pregnancy together

Abstract
Cancer in pregnancy is rare affecting approximately 1 in 1,000 pregnancies. The incidence is expected to rise as women delay childbearing. The most common malignancies associated with pregnancy are cancer of the breast, cervix, leukaemia, lymphoma, melanoma, thyroid, ovary and colon. It is, of course, a devastating and traumatic diagnosis to receive at anytime and presents a number of challenges to the successful management of both the cancer treatment and of the pregnancy. There are substantial risks to both the unborn child and the mother, which vary according to: the stage of pregnancy, the cancer type, the kinds of diagnostic procedures and the cancer therapy. This presentation will discuss some of the recommendations and outcomes in managing both parties in this difficult therapeutic, social and ethical situation.
