Abstract
Critical concerns about a narrowing of scope in game design-an increase in genre-based videogame production- are not only premised upon a misunderstanding of the nature of commercial development and the dynamics of popular media, but also contrive to ignore the long, ongoing history of innovative, independent design that expresses new possibilities for the production, aesthetics and meaning of videogames.
