RESEARCH IMPACT STATEMENT
Research Background
“Dancers are space eaters” was a three-week contemporary dance festival committed to the development support and promotion of contemporary dance and its associated practices. “Space eaters” sought to ask questions about the possibilities and limitations of contemporary dance; to explore questions of sustainability for Australian contemporary dance artists; to examine the relationship between diverse dance practices as they occur in the live, pre-recorded and virtual domains; to establish platforms for young and emerging choreographers; and to grow national and international networks.
Research Contribution
“Dancers are space eaters” positioned contemporary choreographic and performance practice in a critical but supportive environment where ideas could be tested and explored through live performance, exhibition, film, as well as through discussion and debate. As the only national forum for independent contemporary dance in Australia, “Dancers are space eaters” offered a unique opportunity for development, presentation, discussion and debate, as well as national and international networking opportunities for Australian dance artists in general and Western Australian artists in particular.
Research Significance
The Festival was funded by the Dance Board of the Australia Council for the Arts, the Australian Government’s arts funding and advisory body, and Healthway, the WA Health Promotion Foundation. Dramaturge and performer, Raimund Hogue’s internationally acclaimed solo performance was made possible through the support of the Melbourne International Arts Festival.
