RESEARCH IMPACT STATEMENT

Research Background
The Hanging of Jean Lee was concerned with the investigation into new combinations of the forms and conventions of live events for the excavation and exposure of a fragment of Australia’s cultural and social history. Could we tell a story combining poetry, archival photos, verbatim accounts and court records through song, projection of images and live music?

Research Contribution
This project is part of a larger project in Austalian theatrical experimentation to find a fresh and dynamic engagement with the past through new combinations of familiar conventions. The work took an innovative approach to populist musical form, unconventional in its drawing together elements of high fictionality with documentary record.

Research Significance
The project received the majority of its funding through the Theatre Board of the Australia Council and was sponsored by The Sydney Opera House Studio. It was reviewed in all the major Sydney press. Reviews can be found at Realtime 73 and Realtime 74. ABC Radio recorded the songs for release on CD and Radio National.
