Abstract

For cultural studies, the "everyday" is an "other": which is to say it is a way of thinking abouth what otherwise obtains as the dark side of all that hides in the light. It is also where others lurk. As such, in order to grapple with the everyday as a concept, one has first of all to grapple with what is consigned to it, the other. The other is, I want to argue, an analogon for the everyday: our treatment of it prefigures our treatment of the everyday, and to the extent this is true, its problematisation should be central to our thinking on the everyday.
