Abstract
Suggests two traditions in Indian English fiction: social realist and magic realist. Examines mostly the latter in Devdutt Pattanaik's reworking of an episode from The Mahabharata in 'The Pregnant King' and Kalyan Ray's parodic mix of Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' and 'Midsummer Night's Dream' in 'Eastwords'. Also looks at Tabish Khair's 'subaltern' retelling of Meadows Taylor in 'The Thing about Thugs'.
