Abstract

Universal preschool is being considered as a policy option in many parts of the world, but the most influential evidence relates to disadvantaged groups. Preschool improves disadvantaged children's school readiness, educational achievements, and social adjustment. It is not the only influence—parental support also benefits children's development, particularly if combined with center-based programs. Additionally, the longer-term effects of preschool for disadvantaged children are mediated by the schools subsequently attended.
