RESEARCH IMPACT STATEMENT

Research Background

Register: Tasmanian Artists 2006 was the third collaboration between the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery and Contemporary Art Services Tasmania (CAST). The exhibition was the outcome of some fifty-artist studio visits by curators Craig Judd and Michael Edwards around Tasmania, 2005/2006. Featuring the work of 10 artists: Matt Calvert, Amanda Davies, Fred Fisher, Lisa Garland, David Martin, Petra Meers, Michael Muruste, Denise Ava Robinson and Catherine Woo, Register was a deliberately heterogenous exhibition.

Research Contribution

A broad range of media was represented: painting, photography, sculpture, installation and video. Rather than searching for works that responded to specific, pre-determined themes or content or types of practice, the connection ‘across the artworks’ in the Register series is process – a living and evolving field of research into personal and formal artistic concerns. The selected artists have discovered a particular artistic vocabulary and are intent on exploring all levels of that language with expansive bodies of work. The apparent confidence of the art in Register is a direct manifestation of the incremental learning and development that close engagement with process delivers.’

Research significance

This exhibition featuring the work of ten living Tasmanian artists was a significant project undertaken by two of Tasmania’s pre-eminent arts institutions: the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery, and the Australia Council and state funded contemporary art organization, CAST.
