Abstract

This paper elucidates the observed and predicted performance of selected full-scale embankments in relation to the excess pore pressures, lateral and vertical displacements, using a plane strain finite element model based on the modified Cam-clay theory. The analysis is executed by transforming the vertical drain system into equivalent drain walls by adjusting the drain spacing and the permeability coefficent of soil. A number of case histories are discussed and analyzed, in view of various ground improvement schemes applied to stabilize the soft clay foundation beneath selected full-scale test embankments. The predicted results are in good agreement with the field measurements.
