Abstract

In this numerical study, an investigation is carried out to analyze the earthquake induced#163ing between two insufficiently separated base isolated buildings considering the inelasticbehavior of the structures¿ response. The base isolated buildings are modeled as a four-storyand a three-story system to simulate the structural behavior. Moreover, non-linear viscoelasticimpact elements are applied to model the collisions at different story levels using the Elcentro1940 earthquake record. The resulting systems of second order constant coefficient equationsare reformulated as a system of first order ordinary differential equations and solved using theordinary differential equation solver of MATLAB. The #163ing behavior of the buildings hasconsiderable influence on the behavior of the lighter building causing substantial amplificationof the response and leading to considerable permanent deformations due to yielding. On theother hand, the behavior of the heavier building is nearly unaffected by the collisions betweenthe structures.
