Abstract

This study investigates the axial load-deformation behaviour of hollow concrete specimens with an inner PVC tube and externally confined with CFRP sheets. Six circular concrete specimens (150 mm in diameter x 300 mm in height) were made with 40 MPa concrete. These specimens were divided into two groups. The first group is the control group consisting of three specimens with a central hole (90 mm diameter) in each specimen, one of them without confinement, one specimen was wrapped with one layer of CFRP sheet and the remainder saw wrapped with two layers of CFRP sheet. The second group, also consisting of three hollow core specimens with an inner PVC tube and the same wrapping configuration as the first group specimens. The specimens were subjected to axial load up to failure. The axial load-deformation behaviour and factors that affect this behaviour, such as: degree of confinement, presence of inner hole and using PVC tube for inner confinement were examined. It was found that the axial load of the hollow specimens can be significantly increased by using CRFP confinement and both strength and ductility of hollow specimens are improved by using inner PVC tube in combination with two layers of CFRP confinement.
