Investigating a cup of tea

Abstract
This article describes a practical approach to investigating a familiar context: a cup of tea. The investigations suggested support outcomes associated with the 'Working Scientifically' strand (level 5) of the Science curriculum profile for Australian schools in two ways. First, when students devise their own experiments about this topic they develop skills of planning and conducting investigations, processing data and evaluating findings. Second, when students debate the reliability and validity of experimental investigations they develop the ability to evaluate critically their own experimental procedures as well as the procedures of others. The investigations described should challenge secondary or even upper primary students to consider how they could perform investigations about issues associated with a cup of tea.
