Abstract

The well-being of any community critically depends on an effective health-care service. Present research in the Western countries especially the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia pays attention to the strategic human resource management (SHRM) in the health-care industry which demonstrates the positive relationships between SHRM and improved organizational outcomes such as reducing patient mortality and increasing quality of patient care. However, fewer is discovered about SHRM in health-care section in developing countries, in particular Thailand. Like any other developing countries in Southeast Asia, Thailand is facing a major challenge to standardize its health-care sector and system as the world standard. This paper aims to explore the adoption, character and effect of SHRM in Thai hospitals in the context of the country's economic and social development and transformations and their linkages to the job engagement of health-care workers (nurses). Semi-structured questions were developed from literature review. Questions were back-translated and checked by two Thai experts in health-care services. Twelve nurses from various hospitals and occupation levels were interviewed. Data were analyzed using Nvivo program. This paper discovers the application of SHRM and its effect toward job engagement in Thai health-care industry. Future research and limitation are included in this paper.
