Abstract

In December 1980, the Department of Industry and Commerce identified major mining and manufacturing investment projects worth over thirty-three billion dollars at the committed or final feasibility stage. Accompanying tables reveal the dominance of Western Australia , Queensland and New South Wales as centres for proposed investments and the importance of energy resources. Natural gas, coal and aluminium — sometimes described as ‘congealed electricity’ — figure prominently, (see Tables 1 and 2).
