Abstract

The months preceding and following the death of Mao Tse-tung in September o f last year witnessed a series of political events that, even by China’s standards, were quite exceptional. Is it possible at this relatively early stage to come to some preliminary understanding of their significance in respect to the course of China’s political economy in the foreseeable future? It is to that task that this article is addressed.
