Abstract
The works of the French communist philosopher, Louis Althusser, have in recent years attained some prominence, exerting a considerable influence on both the form and content of current debates on marxist and revolutionary theory. With his stress on rigour and his plea for a ‘scientific’ marxism freed from all ‘ideological’ trappings such as humanism, Althusser represents for many an important new point of departure from marxist theory following the theoretical poverty of the Stalin era and the ‘revisionism’ which swept the international communist movement following the 20th Congress of the CPSIJ in 195fi.
