Finite element modelling of a new earthquake protection method involving soil-structure interaction
This study investigates the feasibility of using a two-dimensional finite element program QUAD4M for evaluating the performance of a newly proposed earthquake protection method which involves soil-structure interaction. The program was selected as it can compute the time-domain dynamic responses of soil sediment and earth structures subject to earthquake excitation. More importantly, the dynamic properties of soil materials can be modelled by an equivalent-linear model so that the material nonlinearity can be taken into account. The feasibility of using QUAD4M has been demonstrated by a series of numerical simulations. A parametric study has been carried out to evaluate the effectiveness and robustness of using the program.
